Simpson County's Jail is now smoke-free. Jail officials made the move on July 1st, after giving inmates a 3-month notice.
Jail officials say the move is designed to make their quarters easier to clean, and healthier for employees and inmates. To ease the transition, jailers gave the inmates candy, Nicorette patches, and extra recreation time to adjust to the new policy.
Simpson County's jail is one of the first in this area to make the move, but officials say it's a trend that is growing for insurance and legal liability reasons.
