UPDATED: Nine Children Removed from Rowan County Home


The mother, 35-year-old Edith Strange, is in jail on wanton endangerment charges. Police are still looking for the children's father who will also be charged.

UPDATED 8:40PM -- Kentucky State Police have arrested a Rowan County man accused of leaving his nine children in deplorable conditions.

State police say they found Johnathan Prater, 34, in a Mt. Sterling hospital on Thursday morning. He was receiving medical treatment for a fall.

Prater and the children's mother, Edith Strange, 35, are charged with wanton endangerment. Police say a total of nine children, ranging from two-months-old to 17-years-old had no food.

A neighbor says some of them often walked half a mile to her home to ask for water. The neighbor says the house the kids were living in didn't have any electricity or water.

Police say the two-month-old and another child had to be treated for malnutrition and dehydration. The two-month-old also had to be treated for hypothermia. Four other children were also treated and released.

Prater is lodged in the Montgomery County Detention Center.


ROWAN COUNTY, Ky. (WBKO) -- Nine children were removed from a Rowan County home and their mother was arrested, after child services found the place to be in terrible condition.

Police say three of the children were in their teens. The oldest is 17 and the other 6 children were all 9 years old and younger. The youngest is only 2-months old.

Kentucky State Police say the house had no electricity or running water. 6 of the children were treated for malnutrition and dehydration, and the 2-month-old is being treated for hypothermia.
