Peabody Deals with Setbacks

A judge in Frankfort has dealt a setback to plans for a coal-burning power plant planned near Mammoth Cave.

Franklin Circuit Judge Thomas Wingate ruled the state made numerous mistakes in granting a permit for Peabody Energy’s Thoroughbred Plant in Muhlenberg County.

The plant would cost $2.5 billion to build.

Wingate sent the permit back to the Kentucky Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet for reconsideration.

The plant was proposed in 2001 and has been held up for years by appeals.

A spokesman for the state Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet said the judge’s order was being reviewed.
