Ethan Burden, 7, is meeting his new puppy, Tucker, for the first time.

"Hopefully, it'll help him be able to blend in more with his peers," said Angela Burden, Ethan's mom.

Ethan has autism. His family is getting Tucker to provide a safety net.

"It would be nice for us to go to the bathroom and not worry about him running away, getting a shower and not worrying about him going outside, and going into traffic, or running away," said Burden.

Blessings Unleashed is an organization that helps provide families who have children with special needs with assistance dogs.

"We develop an individualized training plan based on the needs of the family," said Dana Hall, with Blessings Unleashed.

"Based on what I've read and what I've been told by other people these dogs are supposed to have a calming affect," said Sandy Otto, a puppy raiser.

All of the dogs in the program are yellow labs. They go through an intensive training program to learn how to interact with the child.

"We can use the dogs to help the children calm down through their meltdowns that they have," said Hall.

"The puppy raisers have to socialize the dogs. They have to bring them out and expose them to different things," said Otto.

Ethan also has a sensory disorder where he pulls his hair, eyebrows, and even his eyelashes.

"We're hoping that the dog will be trained well enough to pick up on those behaviors and either put his paws on him or nose him where Ethan will divert his attention away from himself onto the dog," said Burden.

The Burden's are hoping Tucker will also help Ethan with his communication skills.

"He'll be this cool kid that has a dog, Tucker, that comes to school with him and Tucker will go with us and just be another member of the family," said Burden.

The family is counting down the days until Tucker can officially come home. He still has 12 more weeks of training.

Blessings Unleashed is currently looking for puppy raisers. The raisers take the dogs to their training classes and enforce the skills they learn.
