In Utah, the families of six miners trapped for nearly two weeks, gathered together on Aug. 19, 2007, as a statement was read on their behalf.
The statement criticized the officials in charge of the rescue effort, accusing them of having “given up” on the missing men.
In the statement, the families urged the mine’s owner and federal officials to drill a hole into the mine large enough to send down a rescue capsule.
Rescue teams have drilled four holes into the Crandall Canyon Mine so far - the latest attempt found low levels of oxygen.
Three lives have been lost in the rescue effort.
