Memphis Bridge Back Open

An interstate bridge in Memphis, Tennessee that closed after work crews noticed a problem with a bridge pier is now back open.

Construction workers closed the Interstate-40 Bridge between Tennessee and Arkansas early Aug. 27.

The decision was made after engineers discovered a bridge pier had settled about four inches overnight.

A detour was set up to divert traffic onto I-55, which runs parallel to
I-40.

Crews are doing work on the bridge to improve its stability in case of an earthquake.

The New Madrid Fault Line runs right through the area.
