Western fans didn't want to miss the big game against Florida, and while many didn't make the ten hour drive to the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, they were rooting for the Hilltoppers right here in Kentucky.

We caught up with some fans who were cheering on Western Kentucky on a history making day.

It's the day of the big game and all eyes at Buffalo Wild Wings are on the screen.

"Oh, it's a blast. We're having so much fun. We came to get something to eat and have a drink or two. And we just scored, so that's exciting!" Western Alum Ashleigh Kessinger exclaimed.

But halfway across town, there's a more quiet atmosphere at the Kappa Alpha house, though not by much.

"I'm glad that they're playing the Gators right now because they were champions last year," Western Freshman Willi Middleton admitted.

It's Rush Week on Greek Row, but that hasn't stopped the guys from taking some time to prop their feet up and catch the score.

"You know, football and rush are huge around Western's campus. It's very exciting. Should be a great day for everybody," Western Senior Ian Loughry assured.

But whether they're dining in or hanging out, there's a reason why everyone's sporting the red.

It's Western Kentucky's first game competing in Division 1-A and no matter the score, this game marks the beginning of a new era.

"It's a great thing. I think it's awesome. They're moving up and I'm glad to be here. The school's doing a lot," Middleton said.

"It's a good jump for Western and it's a big move. And hopefully, we'll be bigger now," Kessinger added.

"I wish they'd have done it sooner when I was a younger Western student, but it's a new step for Western and I think it's going to bring more fans to the games and I think it'll be a great move for the school as a whole," Loughry said.

Though some of them didn't make the drive south, Hilltopper fans will be able to get out on Sept. 8 for the first home game of the season.

WKU's first homegame is against West Virginia Tech at 4 p.m.
