After months of watching from the outside, former Senator Fred Thompson finally threw his hat in the Republican ring for president.
Thompson launched his candidacy on late night T.V. and released a 15-minute webcast overnight explaining his rationale.
He pledges to address what he says are "grave issues affecting the safety and security of the American people and our economic well being."
The testing-the-waters phase of his campaign has been marked by lackluster fundraising, staffing shuffles and repeated questions about his lobbying career and thin record in the Senate.
