Preparing Kindergarten Students for School

For a few first time kindergarten students, Friday was a chance to find out more about hands-on learning and how to not spread germs.

We visited an area classroom to find out more.

"The big push today is to have fun with hands on learning," said Patrice McCrary, an award-winning teacher who works in Warren County and Kleenex's spokesperson. "To learn that there are germs out there, but there are ways that we can keep from spreading those germs in a safe manner."

The experience was complete with a ride on a school bus to and from school, and of course, hands-on learning.

"If a child is busy doing something with his or her hands, he or she is going to learn much more readily than just sitting and hearing words go in one ear and out the other ear," said McCrary.

To teach about germs, a special lotion was used along with a black light to teach kids how easy it is for germs to spread.

"Kleenex brand tissues are teaming up with educators to let them know they understand the importance of making sure your environment is a safe environment," said McCrary.

While local students and their parents did attend, Kleenex also teamed up with TheMotherhood.com to find five moms from all over the country who are known for blogging.

"The group of bloggers here today are really influential women on the internet," said Cooper Munroe of TheMotherhood.com. "They're really influential in the social media space, and they all have incoming kindergarteners. They're perfect."

"They all have up to two million hits a month on their blog websites," said McCrary.

And of course, they will blog about Friday's experience.

"The experience of seeing my youngest daughter go off of to school and what she learned on the trip, and also just share some tips," said Jamie Reeves of Nashville who is known for BlondeMomBlog.com.

"They've gone from this baby stage, they're stepping into this school world," said McCrary. "They're going to love it. It's going to be a wonderful experience."
