Overcrowded Jails Mean More Being Paroled

The number of inmates in the state of Kentucky has steadily grown over the years.
That's nothing however to the amount of them that get paroled or probated simply to make more space.
"We have 109 beds and for the last few months we've been ranging between 130 and 150 inmates at any given time," says Matt Mutter, Barren County Deputy Jailer.
The large number of inmates has forced those at the Barren County Corrections Center to try to make more room.
"It makes it difficult especially for the inmates because the overcrowding causes some of them to have to sleep on the floor on mattresses," says Mutter.
But while his jail is packed full... others are letting inmates out as soon as they come in.
Commonwealth Attorney Chris Cohron says parole boards are doing more to get prisoners released to ease both the financial and physical burden on the state.
"We've quit telling victims when we can expect their offenders to be released," notes Cohron.
In order to combat the shorter sentences being given to offenders, Cohron says he may have to ask for lengthier ones than he'd normally ask for.
Warren County Circuit Court Judge Steve Wilson say he can't believe some of the people that are starting to be paroled.
"Every week I'll get a list of whose being let out of prison and some of those people being let out of prison for population issues are
violent, dangerous people."
Bowling Green defense attorney Alan Simpson says while that is true, jail is not the place for everyone.
"Figure out which people will benefit from treatment which is a large part of that population," says Simpson.
But even still the amount of people coming through jail doors is behind bars will keep on growing.
Judge Wilson says the situation doesn't come down to the judges, prosecutors or even the jail system.
Its all on the shoulders of the legislators who decide the law.
