The governor says 300 homes have been evacuated, but containment Friday has increased to 20 percent.
Winds have pushed the fire down from mountains on the southern edge of the Mojave Desert, across the California aqueduct, and up to the backyards of modern homes in the desert city of Palmdale.
A massive Boeing 747 supertanker has arrived overhead to join other aircraft battling the blaze.
