A Barren County Father Accepts Son's Purple Heart

"I'm thankful that we were surrounded by friends who continue to pray for us and uplift us, because it has been a long, hard road. This is a battle inside of a war that, you know, obviously it is a victory. We finally got them to recognize his injuries were real," said Freddie Wilkerson, father of Justin Wilkerson.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky (WBKO) -- A father of a soldier injured in Afghanistan receives his son's Purple Heart. After submitting paper work four different times, requesting his son be honored with a purple heart, Freddie Wilkerson accepted it on behalf of his son today.

In 2008, Justin Wilkerson was driving in Afghanistan, when a rocket propelled grenade hit the side of the vehicle. The soldier suffered with a traumatic brain injury. Wilkerson chose to continue serving his country after the accident, but died in 2009.

The ceremony took place at Barren County High School.
