MUHLENBERG CO., KY (WFIE) -
The Kentucky State Fire Marshal's Office says Saturday morning's massive fire that killed two people in Muhlenberg County has now been ruled accidental.
51-year-old Douglass C. Smith and his wife, 49-year-old Donita J. Smith were in their Hazel Creek Road home when a massive fire broke out between midnight and 3:00 early Saturday morning.
Three fire departments responded to the call, and after investigation, Alan Gregory with the fire marshal's office says the fire started in the front of the home.
Beechmont Fire Chief Tommy Dickerson says the Smith's do have two children who were not home at the time of the fire.
14 News spoke with a neighbor who says they knew the couple. They tell us that they were good, hard working people.
Community members say Beechmont is a close community that helps each other through tough times.
"Seems like everybody pulls together when they have to," Beechmont resident, Ronald Earl Chadwick says.
"It's a pretty close-knit community. The community will probably have some kind of benefit, later on down the road," Chief Dickerson says.
Muhlenberg County Coroner says autopsy results should be available soon.
