Accused Greenbrier Mayor Stripped of Duties

GREENBRIER, Tenn. (AP) -- The mayor accused of stealing from the Toys for Tots charity he founded has been stripped of most of his mayoral duties.

Reports say the Greenbrier Board of Mayor and Alderman on Monday night reassigned Mayor Billy Wilson's purchasing and approval authorities to the vice mayor. It was the second of two votes needed to make the change.

Wilson has been mayor since 2004, and officials said the board does not have the power to force him to resign.

In a meeting last month, the panel also stripped him of his power as the volunteer chief of the local fire department by putting him on administrative leave.

Wilson is accused of stealing $60,000 from GreenRidge Toys for Tots, serving Greenbrier and Ridgetop. A settlement date is Jan. 24.
