Acquitted In Murray State Dorm Fire, Walker Faces Other Charges

BENTON, Ky. (AP) -- A man acquitted in a fatal Murray State University dormitory fire is due back in court Monday on evidence tampering charges.

According to The Paducah Sun, Jerry Walker Jr. was indicted in relation to six letters. They were sent to Walker himself, his girlfriend and several other dorm residents. They were written anonymously. The letters were evidence in a trial last month at which a jury found Walker not guilty of arson, manslaughter, assault and wanton endangerment.

Commonwealth's Attorney Mark Blankenship said that while the tampering charge usually involves destroying or altering evidence, it also covers fabricating evidence.

Prosecutors believe Walker wrote the letters after the Sept. 18, 1998, fire that killed one student and injured several others.

Defense attorney Dennis Null said he hopes the charges won't stick.
