BG-WC Airport Still Searching For Passenger Airline

Updated: Tue 9:33 PM, Sep 04, 2012

Elizabethtown Airport says they're in talks with two airlines to provide commuter service by the end of the year. That same service could come to Bowling Green in the future.

"We at Bowling Green have had discussions with similar airlines here at our airport and we are still working daily trying to actually getting a carrier committed to come in," says Airport Manager Rob Barnett.

Airport officials stress signing a committed carrier takes time. The facility is ready for an airline, but the airport needs to cover $2 million in start-up costs. They also want to find an airline that provides passengers with smooth service to other airports.

"We have had recent interest from a couple of airlines that are smaller feeder type airlines, but you want to make sure that whatever airline you choose has a co-chair agreement, has an interline agreement, with a larger airline," says Barnett.

Mayor Bruce Wilkerson welcomes any potential airline and says it would benefit already established businesses who have headquarters in the area.

"I think air service would be an advantage to the city mainly through its economic development programs. We have a lot of businesses that would benefit from having direct service from our airport perhaps to chicago or something like that where they could hit a major hub," says Mayor Wilkerson

The Bowling Green - Warren County Regional Airport has surveyed those potential business passengers and say they know what will best suite the area.

"We have done the necessary research to understand and learn about those so that when we go out to an airline and we pitch a proposal it is the right proposal, with the right airplanes, with the right frequency of service and the right connectivity," says Barnett.

To find the right service Barnett says they are looking at airlines that would fly to Chicago and Atlanta.

Barnett also says he has more meetings planned with airlines for October.
