BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -- A viral threat of a criminal outbreak based on a popular movie is being taken seriously by police.
In the movie, "The Purge," a mob hunts and kills people during a fictitious 12-hour period in which all criminal activity becomes legal.
Officials say a teenager started the rumor in Louisville, which spread rapidly through social media. Now, Bowling Green Police say they are prepared to handle threats here locally.
"I'll tell you that we're prepared really for anything like that all the time. We stay prepared for that just because we don't want to be caught off guard and so, yes, we've heard the rumors, we've discussed the rumors, and we've taken the action necessary to do what we need to do that day, or really any day," Officer, Ronnie Ward, said.
In Louisville last Friday, tens of thousands of people tuned in to an online scanner to follow the false reports.
