BRASS Dedicates Tree to Domestic Violence Victim

It's the last week of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Barren River Area Safe Space (BRASS) dedicated a tree in honor of Susan Dumore, who was murdered in 1992 as a result of domestic violence.

BRASS has a memorial garden with trees and plaques dedicated to area victims and their families.

It all began with the idea of a young girl who lived at the shelter with her mother.

"She came home from school one day with a Styrofoam cup with a marigold in it, and she wanted to plant it out in the courtyard behind the shelter. She made a little cardboard sign that said Sara's Garden, and said to me, this way, you'll never forget me," said BRASS Executive Director Lee Alcott.

Sara's one small flower is now a garden... in memory of all those lost as a result of domestic violence.

Alcott says the garden wouldn't be possible without the support of the community that has donated its funds and services to the organization. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
