UPDATED: Two People Shot In Monroe County

"I just didn't want nobody to get killed. I was doing everything I could to get them apart," said Jason Murley.

UPDATED 10:43 PM -- "Well, we were sitting there on our couch watching TV. We hear all the commotion and fighting going on, and we come out and find out someone had been shot -- two people had been shot up here," said Bryan Maynard.

The shooting happened just two houses down from Maynard's on Fountain Run Road about four o'clock Sunday afternoon.

A family member says a verbal fight started on the phone, then one of the men went to the house and it turned into a fist fight.

"I just didn't want nobody to get killed. I was doing everything I could to get them apart," said Jason Murley.

That's when Murley said one of the men pulled out a gun.

"I was trying to slap it away, but it still got in somebody's hands," he said.

He said his uncle shot Murley's cousin and aunt.

Police say the woman was shot in the arm and the man in the stomach.

Murley said his family doesn't typically fight like that and the incident took him by surprise -- like it did his neighbors.

"Just surprised me, especially being right by my house. Usually turn on the TV and you see it on TV happening away from here, and it's happening in Fountain Run -- kind of makes me scared," said Maynard. "Makes me want to shut the doors, lock my windows, and not turn the lights on that way nobody knows I'm around."

Kentucky State Police have released the names in the case.

They say 58-year-old Ricky Wyatt has been arrested and charged with assault.

Police also say 34-year-old Christopher Burgess and 49-year-old Rita Downing were each shot and currently remain at Vanderbilt Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
