BARREN COUNTY, Ky (WBKO) -- UPDATE: A call just before 9 O'clock on Jack Brown Road began what would be a dangerous Monday night for Barren County Sheriff's Deputies.
"A male was attempting to hurt a female family member. So, they responded to that area. The subject attempted to leave the area and they pursued. The pursuit went for a few miles here in the county." said Barren County Sheriff Kent Keen.
That's when the Barren County Sheriff said Deputy David Houchens attempted to assist in the pursuit, but before he could get to the suspect or the chase, his vehicle struck a tree on Oil Well Road.
The accident involving Deputy Houchens led to Kentucky State Police being called to the scene but the chase was still on for Michael Harvey, 56. After nearly six miles at high speeds, Harvey surrendered to police and is now facing multiple charges, including assault on an officer.
As police arrested Harvey, Deputy Houchens had to be life flighted from the scene of his accident to University of Louisville Hospital. He wasn't kept there for long, Houchens was released early Tuesday morning.
"He's doing well. He has a fracture to his right wrist." added Sheriff Keen.
Officials in Barren County said accidents like the one Deputy Houchens suffered are a reminder of the risk area law enforcement takes everyday when they suit up.
"I don't think there is anytime that you're not concerned about them. Daylight or dark, they are out taking their lives into their own hands to protect the people." commented Barren County Judge/Executive Davie Greer.
As for Deputy Houchens in particular, protecting the people is exactly why he puts on the uniform.
"He's glad to be here. He's glad to be a deputy for the Barren County Sheriff's Department. That reflects in his professionalism and the way he does things." said Sheriff Keen.
