BARREN COUNTY, Ky. (WBKO) Barren River Lake is a hot vacation spot this Memorial Day weekend.
"Mother Nature's working with us. As long as we have that three or four days calling for pretty weather in front of the weekend or the holiday, then you'll pick up at lot more people," said Wayne Shelton, the manager at Barren River Lake State Park Marina.
Already on Friday, people were getting into their boats and onto the water.
One woman will take hers out for the first time since buying it.
"It's a pontoon and this weekend's going to be wonderful," said Anne Barnett, who was at the park from Louisville.
Shelton says the water is good this year and boaters are welcome.
"We're running about three feet above summer pool. That doesn't hurt us really, just gives us more lake to run in."
However, he says boaters need to keep a close eye on what's in front of them.
"As the lake comes up, it picks up logs and stuff and debris off the banks and puts it into the water," Shelton said.
After a day spent on the water, many of the lake's visitors will be staying at the lodge.
"Our booking pace started early, and folks are just ready to come and get the summer started after such a bad winter," said Lisa Davis, the Park Resort's manager.
Davis says the guests keep coming back because the park has a lot to offer.
"Being on the lake, horseback riding, 18-hole golf course, so people can come out here and stay and do a number of things," Davis said.
She and Shelton agree summer business is starting off strong this year, and they hope the trend continues through the season.
