Barren River Regional Cancer Center Celebrates 10 Year's of Saving Lives

The Barren River Regional Cancer Center in Glasgow celebrated it's 10th anniversary today with an open house.

They treat 25 to 30 people a day, and have served more than 2,000 from south central Kentucky since opening in 2002. The center provides the same high-quality treatment without having to travel to a larger hospital or university setting.

"If you have cancer, you always want to take the approach that will give you the best care," said patient James Shaw.

The best care is what they aimed to achieve when they opened in 2002, and when they expanded in 2009 to make more room for the most up to date equipment.

"The trilogy linear accelerator we have, we're able to deliver standard 3-D type treatments, but also IMRT, which is a more precise, precision-type treatment," said Radiation Oncologist and Medical Director Dr. Craig Tyree.

It may be this equipment saving lives, but the patients say it's being close to home that makes all the difference.

"A car ride may not seem like it's that stressful, but when you're in a situation like some of these patients are, every minute less that you're traveling makes a huge difference," said Tyree.

Those trips can be frequent for many.

"There are forty four continuous treatments five days a week, so Monday through Friday, you're going to have to go," said Shaw.

Another patient says another perk of "hometown" treatment is the connections you form with other patients that live near you.

"I've gotten acquainted with them by them having the same problem I had, and did the same treatments," said patient Arvel Riddle.

Riddle says having that support group makes the battle that much easier. Both Riddle and Shaw say their treatments have been effective. Riddle is in remission, and Shaw says he's already seen positive feedback from his recent treatments.
