Beshear Willing to Give Tax Reform Panel More Time

By  |

A panel appointed by Gov. Steve Beshear to recommend tax reforms can have more time to complete the work if necessary.

Beshear told reporters Wednesday that members of the Blue Ribbon Commission of Tax Reform need only ask and he will amend his executive order to allow more time to finalize their recommendations.

The panel, working under a Nov. 15 deadline, has shortened a list of nearly 100 recommendations. Already, the group has stricken a proposal to institute a 6 percent tax on food at grocery stores, which would have generated some $500 million a year.

The commission is scheduled to meet again Nov. 8.

Beshear appointed the panel earlier this year to recommend a simpler tax code that would generate enough revenue to meet state needs even during recessions.
