FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Gov. Steve Beshear announced Miller's resignation in a statement Tuesday afternoon. Miller had overseen the state's social service agency since Beshear took office in late 2007.

Beshear said Miller has done "extraordinary work" in tough economic times that have forced more Kentuckians to turn to the agency for help. The governor credited Miller with paving the way for programs that will lead to healthier citizens.

Deputy Secretary Eric Friedlander will serve as interim head of the agency pending a search for Miller's successor.

Miller said in a statement, she's been blessed with a 35-year career in public service and privileged to serve the last four years with employees in the social services agency.
