Bill Clinton Tries to Boost McConnell Challenger

By Associated Press |

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Bill Clinton's first campaign stop of 2014 comes in Kentucky, where his pitch for Democratic Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes comes with strong family connections.

Grimes' father is a longtime friend of the ex-president, who headlines a Grimes fundraiser Tuesday in Louisville.

Grimes is running for the seat held by Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who is seeking a sixth term.

McConnell's strategy includes linking Grimes with President Barack Obama, who is unpopular in Kentucky. But Clinton carried Kentucky when he won the presidency, and his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, was also a proven vote-getter in Kentucky during her failed run for the White House in 2008.

Grimes' campaign points to Clinton's record of economic growth and job creation.

McConnell's campaign says the Clintons failed to help get other Kentucky Democrats elected.
