Bowling Green and the AARP are kicking off their inaugural "50 over Fifty Citizens Academy" this week.

It's a chance for locals over the age of 50 to get an inside look at how the city operates. The program is a week-long event that takes its students through nearly every aspect of city government.

"They get some tours of different facilities. They get to hear from department heads about what the city does... how it functions, how it's set up and operates and funds itself... Just a variety of topics the city's involved in and how it interacts with citizens on a daily basis," said Bowling Green Neighborhood and Community Services Director Brent Childers.

Childers says some departments will look for input from the students along the way. The participants will end the week with a graduation ceremony from the Citizen's Academy.
