Bowling Green Liquor Stores Open On Sunday

"We're going to be open. We're going to be here to serve our customers, but the hours, we don't know yet," Cochran said.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- "I've actually gotten a lot of phone calls from people who are just hearing me answer the phone and then they automatically hang up just to make sure that we are open," said Martin Strobel, a clerk at Shenanigan's Wine & Spirits.

This weekend was the first time Bowling Green Liquor Stores could legally open their doors on Sunday, and customers said it's about time.

"I'm tired of driving to Portland or Franklin to get beer on Sunday, so it's definitely a good thing that they started selling on Sunday," said Michael Blaker.

"I live in a dry county and I have to drive either to Bowling Green or E-town, and Bowling Green is a lot closer to where we live. So since they passed it, it's better for me. I don't have to drive as far," said Allana Hodges,

Strobel said he had more customers than he expected.

"Our store down in Franklin has been doing pretty successful on Sundays, so we're thinking we'll probably get the same sort of success," he said.

Randal Cochran, the general manager of Chuck's Liquor stores, said he was busiest after noon, but had fewer customers than during the week.

"I'm not for sure everybody knows that we're allowed to sell on Sundays yet, so it may pick up eventually, we don't know," he said.

He said he's happy to serve customers on Sundays, but explained why he's expecting to lost money by being open on Sunday.

"You've got payroll expenses, utilities -- there's an operating expense. You have to make X amount of dollars per hour or per day to cover those expenses, and the way things are looking right now, it's not going to happen."

Strobel also said Shenanigan's might have to change its hours if it doesn't get the expected business.

Both stores are waiting to see what happens in the weeks to come before making any big changes.

"We're going to be open. We're going to be here to serve our customers, but the hours, we don't know yet," Cochran said.

Chuck's opened at eight this morning and Shenanigan's opened at 11:00.
