Bowling Green Receives Major Economic Benefit from State Tournament

Bowling Green is hosting the Russell Athletics/KHSAA State Football Finals at WKU's Houchens L.T. Smith Stadium this weekend.

The Bowling Green Convention and Visitor's Bureau says this tournament brings upwards of 40,000 people to town annually.

You may have noticed bigger crowds at restaurants and the mall the last couple of days.

Sports Sales Director for the Visitor's Bureau, Amy Cardwell says Bowling Green is the perfect town for this tournament since it's big in size, but has a small-town atmosphere.

"Our hotels and restaurants are booming over with people. Each team averages a hundred players which their travel party averages about a hundred and fifty just with the team. And if you add all of the parents and fans. And then you have several thousand people in town," Cardwell says.

She says Bowling Green gets about $75 per person just from this weekend, giving the town a boost economically.
