A grand jury will hear evidence against a man who police say put a 3-year-old boy into a freezer and closed the lid on him.
The child survived, but a Harlan County sheriff's deputy said there was a great risk of death in the act.
WYMT-TV in Hazard reported a judge heard the case Monday and sent charges of attempted murder and criminal abuse against 24-year-old Randy Hammons to a grand jury.
During the preliminary hearing, Deputy Matt Cope said he found the child had severe bruises and said the boy told him Hammons was "mean to him."
Police say Hammons is the live-in boyfriend of the child's grandmother, who has custody of the boy. Five other children were in the home.
The defense attorney declined comment.
