MORGANFIELD, Ky. (AP) — A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet official says an Ohio River bridge has been shut down so inspectors can check it for damage after it was struck by a barge.
Spokesman Keith Todd said in a statement that a towboat pushing 15 empty barges grazed a pier of a bridge connecting western Kentucky and southern Illinois at 5:38 a.m. Thursday. The pilot reported minor damage to the barges.
The statement said the strike prompted a closure of the Kentucky 56-Illinois Route 13 bridge that connects Morganfield, Ky., and Shawneetown, Ill., for a safety check.
An estimated 3,800 vehicles cross the bridge each day.
