The state Capitol will be dark on Saturday as part of an international environmental campaign sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund.
Gov. Steve Beshear and first lady Jane Beshear said they opted to take part in Earth Hour, an international initiative that encourages everyone to contribute to improving the environment.
Beshear has ordered that all nonessential lights at the Capitol, including those that illuminate the dome and outer walls, be turned off from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m EDT.
The Capitol annex and the Governor's Mansion also will be dark for the hour.
Earth Hour began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia. Since then, it has expanded to more than 7,000 cities and towns in 152 countries and territories, with hundreds of millions of participants across seven continents.
