Changes Considered After Hikers Rescued from Trail

Officials in eastern Kentucky say they are considering changes to a popular trail after 40 people had to be rescued recently while sightseeing.

Pine Mountain Conference Director Shad Baker told WYMT-TV that options under consideration include improving signs along the trail to Bad Branch Falls, adding maps and closing the area during inclement weather. Officials plan to hike the trail to see if they can come up with other suggestions to improve safety.

The options are being considered after a group of 37 students and three adults from La Salle University in Pennsylvania got lost on the trail. The group was rescued safely after an hours-long effort in rough terrain and freezing temperatures. They were in eastern Kentucky on an annual mission trip to help build houses.
