Church Hosts MLK Event For Youth

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -- Sunday afternoon, youth at State Street Baptist Church were part of an event to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The organizer, Lauren Cunningham, said the message of the event was "We All Have A Hand In Justice."

She hoped the young people learned to be active citizens by realizing it's up to everyone to have a safe, accepting and equal community.

At the event, the kids had dinner before breaking out into age-based groups for the lessons.

"Despite violence against him, despite the threat of imprisonment, he inspired people and not just black people. He inspired young, old, black, white -- I mean when you look at the marches, even the March on Washington where he gave his famous speech "I Have A Dream", there were all different types of people. So he inspired a people to be active citizens and to when they see an injustice to call it out," Cunningham said.

The event was primarily for grades three through 12.
