The weather should be perfect for the 33rd Annual Medical Center 10k Classic tomorrow morning and the town is gearing up for the big event!
"It's an opportunity to stress the importance of wellness and exercise," says Joe Tinius, Co-Director for The Medical Center 10k Classic.
While several hundred locals are gearing up for the Classic, some traveled hundreds of miles to participate.
"I came back when I first turned 40, and won the Master's Division for the last three years in a row," Chad Newton of North Carolina says.
Newton traveled more than 300 miles, and is looking to take home another first place title in the 40 and over division for the fourth year in a row.
"Every year it gets a little harder because there is always a new 40-year-old, and I get a year older so we'll see what happens but every year I'm surprised that I still won it again," Newton says.
And Chad isn't the only person occupying the hotels this weekend, Tinius says several runners are from out of town.
"It also brings in some individuals from outside of the area, so it's good for the community in regard to our hotels and other businesses in town for those who come in for the event."
2500 people locally and from out of town will be racing tomorrow.
Tinius says it's important to arrive early because there may be heavy traffic.
"Allow a little extra time to make sure that you can get here and get parked in one of the structures, and get to that starting line one time," he says.
And road closures may play another factor in your drive time tomorrow morning, whether you're participating in the 10k or not.
"Beginning at 6:00 in the morning there will be several street closures in the downtown area of Bowling Green. You can expect most of the streets to be back open around 10:00. However, some will remain closed until 11:00," says Officer Ronnie Ward with Bowling Green Police.
WKU Police and BGPD will both be blockading the roads from University Blvd and 3rd Ave, and everything in between.
