The U.S. Postal Service in Clarksville, Tennessee says it is destroying dozens of children's books that can't be delivered as part of the Governor's Books from Birth Foundation.
The Leaf-Chronicle reported Friday that for years, the local post office agreed to set aside those undelivered books until a volunteer could pick them up because the foundation wasn't paying to have them returned.
But David Walton of the USPS says that's a violation of policy and it's not fair to businesses who do pay for the right to get undelivered mail returned. More than 70 books are being shredded every month.
The foundation provides funding for children to be enrolled in Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, which sends out a new book to children every month.
