Cleanup from a train derailment in southwestern Jefferson County is continuing.
A Paducah & Louisville Railway train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed just after 6 a.m. EDT Monday near Dixie Highway. A leak of a potentially explosive material was contained after the derailment, but crews were working Tuesday to put the railroad cars back on the track or remove them and the highway remained closed.
Although some residents who live near the site have been allowed to return, The Courier-Journal reports residents of a dozen homes were still waiting late Monday for the all-clear.
P&L Railway President Tom Garrett said the train was on its way to Louisville from Paducah with a total of 57 cars.
The company is investigating what caused the train to derail.
