UPDATED 8:46 pm -- Locals call it the most dangerous railroad crossing in their area and Thursday those fears became a reality. The Warren County Sheriff's Office said a dump truck trying to cross eastbound on Dillard Road just after 12 PM never made it across. Instead, it was thrown forty feet after being crushed by an oncoming CSX train. When emergency officials arrived they said the truck was on fire but the driver had apparently been pulled out by someone near by.
"Somebody stopped the driver and helped him out of the vehicle. At this point, they've either left. We weren't able to locate them. We'd like to know who they are and speak with them if they want to call in." said Warren County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy, Tommy Smith.
Once the man was pulled from the truck, he was taken to the back of an ambulance for a health check before ultimately being life flighted to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, where he is listed in critical condition.
A couple railroad crossings in Warren County are scheduled to get upgrades through grants, adding flashing lights and arms. Something the crossing at Dillard Road doesn't have.
"It doesn't have the lights, or cross arms or that sort of thing. You do need to pay particular attention when you're going across those so you don't go through something like this." added Chief Deputy Smith.
The name of the man involved in the accident hasn't been released pending family notification.>>
