BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Birmingham firefighters are digging through rubble in an attempt to locate two people still unaccounted for after an early morning explosion ripped through an apartment building.
Eight other people were injured in the blast Tuesday.
Authorities say four children and four adults have been taken to local hospitals after the explosion. It happened shortly before 3 a.m. at the Gate City Apartments in Alabama's largest city.
Birmingham fire Chief C.W. Mardis tells WBRC-TV that survivors had to crawl through fire and debris to get to the street to safety. Authorities say the fire burned for about two hours but was extinguished by 6:30 a.m.
Mardis said survivors' injuries are mostly burns and scrapes, with none appearing to be life-threatening.
