LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky State Police say divers found no evidence while searching a pond near where a Bardstown police officer was gunned down.

State police Master Trooper Norman Chaffins says the Louisville police dive team searched the entire pond Thursday.

Trained canines led investigators to the pond a few hundred yards from the highway exit ramp where Bardstown K-9 Officer Jason Ellis was killed in an ambush on May 25.

Ellis was shot after he got out of his cruiser to pick up tree limbs strewn on the ramp off the Bluegrass Parkway near Bardstown.

Chaffins says the search was worth the time and effort because investigators can now eliminate the pond as a possible lead to a suspect.

He says investigators are still interviewing people who were arrested by Ellis.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Police divers are searching a pond near where a Bardstown police officer was gunned down in an ambush.

Kentucky State Police spokesman Norman Chaffins said Thursday that trained canines led investigators to the pond. He says the pond is a couple hundred yards away from the exit ramp where K-9 Officer Jason Ellis was killed in the early morning hours of May 25.

Ellis was shot after he got out of his cruiser to pick up tree limbs strewn on the ramp.

Chaffins says it's the first time the pond has been searched, and investigators aren't sure what might be found.

He says the best-case scenario is the Louisville police dive team will find something related to Ellis' death.

Bardstown Police Chief Rick McCubbin has said he thinks Ellis was targeted in the slaying.
