BOWLING GREEN, Ky (WBKO) -- “There was a person who had roots in both Muhlenberg and Ohio counties that was possibly involved in the trafficking crystal methamphetamine," said Curtis McGehee, Muhlenberg County Sheriff.
This person is Joseph Lee. Lee was arrested in early March.
"At the time of his arrest, he was in possession of twenty eight grams of crystal meth and also a convicted felon in possession of a fire arm. We seized approximately $8,000 dollars in cash," said Curtis McGehee, Muhlenberg County Sheriff.
Officers say Lee is from Chicago and has been known to swap fire arms for crystal methamphetamine.
"We are going to continue to investigate it because there are several people involved. It's not just Joseph Lee. Basically, there are several people, even while he as been in jail, that are conducting business as usual for him," said David Thompson, Ohio County Sheriff.
On March 27, Muhlenberg County Sheriff's Department and K9 units, conducted a traffic stop. Police say the woman driving the vehicle was also from Chicago. Officers recovered cash, totaling $15,000.
"The money did seem to be contaminated because the dog did indicate there was something inside of the vehicle that was suspicious to him. The only thing we could find in the vehicle was the money. Then, we had two dogs to alert on the money, indicating it had connected possibly to drug activity," said Curtis McGehee, Muhlenberg County Sheriff.
No arrests were made Thursday, but officers say there will be zero tolerance for drug trafficking.
"Are we going to eliminate all drugs? No, but we are going to make it harder to do business and make it harder for our kids to have opportunity to get that stuff," said David Thompson, Ohio County Sheriff.
The Pennyrile Narcotics Task Force is collaborating with both sheriff's departments in this drug ring investigation.
