He said the county had a total of 43 drug-related deaths in 2011 compared to just 27 in 2012.

A coroner in southeastern Kentucky says he has seen a sharp decrease in the number of drug overdoses in the past year.

Clay County Coroner Danny Finley told WYMT-TV that overdoses dropped from 22 in 2011 to just 8 in 2012. He said the county had a total of 43 drug-related deaths in 2011 compared to just 27 in 2012. He called the numbers an encouraging sign that the drug problem is being dealt with effectively.

Finley and Clay County Sheriff Kevin Johnson attribute the decline to new laws that crack down on doctors who over-prescribed medication.
