Kentucky is about to officially start a nonprofit education foundation modeled after one in Colorado and aimed at attracting funding for innovative school programs.

State Education Commissioner Terry Holliday on Wednesday will deliver paperwork to the secretary of state's office incorporating the new Fund for Transforming Education.

Trustees for the independent 501(c)(3) will hold their first meeting Thursday in Frankfort. Members of the board include Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson, Prichard Committee Executive Director Stu Silberman and Democratic state Rep. Carl Rollins of Midway.

The state Department of Education worked closely with the Denver-based Colorado Legacy Foundation to form the foundation. The Colorado group pumps millions of dollars into that state's public schools for initiatives such as programs to improve students' health and wellness.
