FFA Week Kicks Off With Muddy Truck Day

"It's important to realize that FFA isn't just for farmers. Some people think it is, but it's not." -Steven Owens, Vice President of Greenwood FFA

National Future Farmers of America Week is celebrated by chapters all across the country, including local chapters.

Since 1928, the national FFA organization has been creating leaders all across the united states. This week represents National FFA Week to celebrate all the achievements of the organization; but the event has grown to affect more than just members of the group.

"Everybody else that's not in FFA looks forward to it to, like more than homecoming week. They love seeing all the animals come in. Today is Camouflage Day and Muddy Truck Day. Tomorrow we're bringing in animals and we'll have a barbecue at the end. It's a lot of fun." said FFA members, Katty Rector & Kelsey Hathaway.

Greenwood High School has a list of week long activities planned including Tuesday's Muddy Truck Day, but it's not just the students who are getting in on the action.

"We're going to have a pig kiss as well. We're donating cans in a teacher's name. Which ever teacher gets the most cans donated has to kiss the pig. It helps FFA week, plus it helps donate canned foods." said Greenwood FFA Vice President, Steven Owens.

Muddy Truck and Camoflauge Day is certainly a student favorite, but the most popular event of all, may in fact be the most bizarre.

"We have a horse that's actually going to be in the hallway. Donkeys, ducks, goats, sheep, rabbits. They make noise all day long and the teachers love it." added Hathaway.

This week's fun is a celebration of an organization aimed at growing young people.

"It's important to realize that FFA isn't just for farmers. Some people think it is, but it's not. That's why the name was changed from Future Farmers of America to the National FFA Organization. So people realize it's a national organization that focuses on building leadership skills and public speaking skills." commented Owens.

Students may join the organization for fun, but what they get out of it, is a whole lot more. Each year National FFA Week is scheduled to fall on February 22; In honor of former U.S. President George Washington's birthday.
