Fancy Farm: Grimes and McConnell Showdown, Comer's Big Announcement

FANCY FARM, Ky. (WBKO) -- The 2014 Fancy Farm Picnic is considered one of the biggest political events in Kentucky every year.

The picnic was full of loud cheers and loud boos from a record crowd for Sen. Mitch McConnell and democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes, but perhaps today's biggest announcement came from Agriculture Commissioner James Comer.

"TJ and I have chosen this time and this place to say to all of you, I will be a candidate for Governor in 2015," said Comer, republican candidate for Governor.

Before Comer's big announcement, all eyes were focused on McConnell and Grimes and the clever lines they had about each other.

Grimes spoke first and said she would champion equal pay for women more than McConnell has.

"Only one of us believes women deserve equal pay for equal work. If Mitch McConell were a TV show, he'd be Mad men, treating women unfairly, stuck in 1968 and ending this season," said democratic candidate for United States Senator Alison Lundergan Grimes.

McConnell took an opportunity to call out some recent foreign policy comments by Grimes.

"I'll give my opponent credit, she knows Barack Obama can't be counted on to do anything about the crisis on the border. So, listen to this, this week she came up with her own plan to keep folks from screaming into our country, missile defense!" said Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky.

Several others spoke today including Gov. Steve Beshear, Attorney General Jack Conway and Ag Commissioner James Comer who made the big announcement for Governor.

Comer will officially kick off his campaign in our viewing area in his hometown of Tompkinsville in Monroe County on September 9th. It's there he'll announce his running mate and other members of his staff.
