Federal Grand Jury Convenes to Probe Richie Farmer

LEXINGTON, KY (AP) -- A federal grand jury has convened in Lexington to determine whether Richie Farmer, a Kentucky basketball icon turned politician, violated criminal laws during eight years as state agriculture commissioner.

Farmer wasn't at the federal courthouse Friday, but two former Department of Agriculture employees were seen going in Friday morning. They left about two hours later.

Farmer's attorney, Guthrie True of Frankfort, said earlier this week, several former agency employees had been subpoenaed to appear before the grand jury on Friday.

Farmer's popularity as the shooting guard for a University of Kentucky team dubbed "The Unforgettables" catapulted him into elected office a decade ago. His jersey hangs in the rafters of Rupp Arena alongside those of Dan Issel, Pat Riley, Kenny Walker, and Sam Bowie.
