BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -- Folks at the Knicely Center Saturday were able to get some free financial advice.
Andrew Head, the director of the Center for Financial Success at WKU, recognized a need in the community for a program like this.
Several workshops covered a variety of financial issues from budgets to insurance to retirement planning.
Head said what people of all income levels can relate to is not planning their budgets correctly.
The problem, he said, is people look at the balance in their checkbooks -- doing mental math that isn't accurate because of what they're leaving out of the equation.
"The non-monthly expenses like Christmas or birthdays or weddings or children or car repairs. These things that should be part of the monthly budget, but can't be, unless you're actually setting down and actually working this out regularly," Head said.
Head said he sets aside money each month for those costs so he doesn't get in a bind when it's needed.
It was the first time WKU has hosted a Financial Planning Day, but it won't be the last.
