The general election may be nine months off, but with nine candidates there will be a primary. Some of them are already talking about what they want to do and what they want to change about this city.
"It appears to me that the leadership here has lost sight of the fact that they're here to serve the community, and they're not here for self serving reasons," said candidate Robbin Wells.
The campaign talk is just beginning.
"I think I bring a little something to the table, business background, organization and my ability to communicate. When an issues up, I want to hear both sides of everything before I make a decision," said candidate Rick Williams.
The new candidates include Williams, Jerry Wells, his wife Robbin Wells, Mark Bradford, and Robin Baldwin.
Wells thinks there needs to be changes to the way things are done.
"Number one I think that they should be elected, and if they're going to be appointed I think that they should have run for that office. We have two people right now who got within the full calendar year that they were appointed before they were ever elected, and right now one has been appointed that ran for mayor, but did not run for city commissioner," said Jerry Wells.
His wife, Businesswoman Robbin Wells has a similar view.
"This has happened twice that you've had people that have ended up in leadership, that should've been an elected position where they were appointed, and I think that there are a lot of individuals questioning the integrity and the ethics of those decisions," said Robbin Wells.
Candidate Mark Bradford wants to push for growth.
"We've expanded this university, now we need to expand the economy. We need to think in those terms," said Bradford.
Candidate Robin Baldwin said she is running, because she feels like this is a way she can serve the community.
One of the biggest things she would focus on if elected would be managing the budget.
All four incumbent candidates, Melinda Hill, Joe Denning, Bill Waltrip, and Brian 'Slim' Nash are running as well.
In the other major city election, current Mayor Bruce Wilkerson will be running unopposed.
