Former EKU President Hanly Funderburk Dead At 81

RICHMOND, Ky. (AP) -- Former Eastern Kentucky University President Hanly Funderburk has died. He was 81.

According to a statement from current President Doug Whitlock, Funderburk died on Friday evening in his native Alabama.

Funderburk guided the University from 1985 until his retirement in 1998. Despite difficult budgetary circumstances, the Funderburk presidency was marked by enrollment growth, new academic programs and physical expansion of the campus.

Funderburk's vision for regional outreach is credited with the leading to the development of EKU campuses at Corbin, Manchester and Danville.

Funeral arrangements were being handled by the Alabama Heritage Funeral Home.
