FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) -- A monument honoring the first black paratroopers assigned to Fort Campbell 64 years ago is being dedicated there next month.
The post says the monument honors the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, which was reactivated in 1947 as the 3rd Battalion, 505th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. Fort Campbell said it became the first black unit in history to be a part of an American combat division.
A news release from the post says Fort Campbell was officially integrated by the 3rd Battalion, 505th in 1950 as the 3rd Battalion 188th Airborne Infantry Regiment of the 11th Airborne Division.
The dedication is taking place Sept. 4 in front of the Don F. Pratt Museum.
