FORT KNOX, Ky. (AP) -- Fort Knox is a finalist in the National Gold Medal Awards parks and recreation competition.
It's the first year the awards competition has included a category for armed forces recreation communities.
Fort Knox says it was chosen as a finalist primarily because of its ability to adapt to installation realignment and changing customer needs, because of its efforts to support redeployment of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division from Afghanistan and because it's one of just four military installations accredited by the National Recreation and Park Association.
Award recipients are to be announced in October during the group's annual Congress & Exposition in Anaheim, Calif.
